Installation of the Shock/Impact Sensor (DRAFT)

Postby zanary » Mon Sep 12, 2005 12:34 pm

Installation of the Shock/Impact Sensor for the FX35/45

I will attempt to post instructions along with pictures of how I installed the "DEI OEM STINGER DOUBLEGUARD SHOCK/IMPACT SENSOR" into my FX35. I will post the instructions over the course of a few days as I need to prepare the pictures and do the writeup.

Code: Select all
Credit goes to G-Owners user forum for posting the instructions on how to perform this mod on a G35.  Their link can be found here http://www.g-owners.com/article_read.asp?id=43

5/28/2007 - G-Owners user forum is no longer, but I'll give them credit for their original post which is no longer.

First Part - The Purchase
----------------------------
(A) First you will need to order the "DEI OEM STINGER DOUBLEGUARD SHOCK/IMPACT SENSOR" from the following link.
Image

(B) I wanted to do a clean install in my FX, so I decided to purchase a variet of items from my local Radio Shack. I used most of the, but some of them were left untouched, but I'm sure I'll need them in the future so I decided not to return them. The below pictures identifies which items I purchased and which ones I did not end up using.
Image

(Part 1): Split-Loom Tubing - I wanted to wrap all the cables up nicely so it looked like a factory install. This was the simpliest solution I could come up with. I ended up using only about 1/4 to 1/3 of the tubing. The remaining will remain for my next project.
(Part 2): Heat-Shrink Tubing - I decided to cover my sauder points in heat-shrink tubing for a professional looking install. You can use butt-connectors if you wish. There are plenty of tubing here in all different sizes, so choose wisely.
(Part 3): 20-Gauge Wire - This was the only package in stock, so I went with it. At $5 it was a lot of wire, but I ended up using less than 3 feet.
(Part 4) and (Part 5): Tongues - I couldn't decide if I wanted to use spade or ring tongues so I purchased both when I was at Radio Shack. I ended up using only the ring tongues.
(Part 6): IN4003 Diode - I was looking for the IN4003, but my local Radio Shack did not have them in stock. IN4002 is what is recommended on the instruction page of the DEI OEM STINGER DOUBLEGUARD SHOCK/IMPACT SENSOR, however the G35 instructions indicated that IN40043 work perfectly as well. Each package comes with 2 diodes which is what you need, however I wanted another set incase I destroy one, and at less than $2 I didn't have a problem buying another set.
(Part 7): Electrical Tape - I used this tape to wrap the split-loom tubing along with any cables that were not contained in the split-loom tubing.
(Part 8 ): Assorted Cable Ties - I wanted to wrap the split-loom tubing to the engine bay so that it looks like a professional install. I had some white ones, but blake is the way to go in my opinion.
(Part 9): DEI OEM STINGER DOUBLEGUARD SHOCK/IMPACT SENSOR - The most important part if all, the actual shock sensor.

Second Part - Preparations

Third Part - Installation

Fourth Part - Future Enhancements

I know I know. I was supposed to post my instructions last September, but I keep putting it off. I'll try to get something by the end of this week. I know that rwhoke and bcr23 want them so they can complete their install.

It's not that difficult, you need to prepare a bunch of stuff first, then do the placement, and finally cut the hood alarm latch cables, connect it up, and seal it nice and tight to prevent rain damage, and you're all done. Sounds easy. It is, but I'll post more detail instructions by weeks end. I'll have to dig around for pictures of my install.

Yes, it will work. It's better to install the shock sensor in the interior of the car to keep it away from heat and moisture. Everything you need is under the driver's side dash.

I complicated my install by using a switch AND a relay. The switch allows me to turn the sensor on and off whenever I want, and the relay kills power to the sensor whenever the ignition is on. I tied the sensor into the door sensor so the relay is critical because without it, anytime the sensor is turned on and detects a shock, the interior lights come on.

Installing the sensor under the dash still picks up shock from someone tampering with the headlights or trying to gain access through the wheel well (assuming their arm or hand impacts something solid).

Can you do a write up please... my wheels will be coming in soon and I want to do this mod. Thanks

Yeah, I will do a write-up on how I did my install. I meant to take pictures during the installation but I forgot to. Total install time using my method is about 3 hours but I am also obsessed with clean installs.

At the very least, here is a diagram on the placement of the SPST switch I used, as well as how to wire the relay. I'll take a few pictures of the completed job just so you have an idea of my placements. I did what was easiest and most convenient for me, may be completely different for you.

I'm still working on the write-up for the under dash install. I'll be on vacation starting Friday so I'm not sure if I will have it done by then. It's almost done, just having trouble remembering the technical details since I did it about five weeks ago.

Oops, I forgot about this. My write-up is no different today than it was 3 weeks ago. I'll try to get it done, LOL.

I found some of my handwritten diagrams and instructions. I've transcribed the diagrams into this JPEG file. I'll post instructions this week.

Thanks Zanary... I ordered the sensor last week and should come in anytime soon. I'm assuming that the hood switch wire color is orange same as he diagram?

It is not orange. Since I did not use the hood switch, I am recalling from memory of when I was trying to decide how I wanted to install the sensor. If I remember right, the hood switch has a black wire and a green/black wire. I believe the wire you want is green/black, though it could vary for different model years.

Easiest way to tell is to take a volt meter to the wire and look for voltage when the hood pin's circuit is closed (popped up). Push the pin down and you should see voltage drop to zero.

Good catch. I'll update the diagram accordingly tonight. I wrote down "cut the Teal/Light blue wire which goes to the hood switch". I'll check mine tonight and confirm with a picture as well. BTW, I have a 05 FX35, so hopefully it's the same on the newer ones.

Awesome, I've 2 of these shock sensors for over a year now, never got around to installing.

So if I wanted to hook up 2 of these (place on on either side of the body) then I simply spice together 2 blues and 2 greens into 1 terminal and both reds together and both yellows together?

If you splice the blue and green together, you will greatly increase the chance of false alarms since a signal from the green wire will result in a full alarm trigger, and the green will almost always send an alarm signal before the blue (unless it is a hard shock). I highly advise you use just the blue wire and adjust the sensitivity to suit your liking.

If you are going to install two sensors (though in my experience one, if it's centrally located and adjusted properly, is sufficient), then yes, you can splice the blue, red, and yellow wires together. My sensor is installed under the dash and it detects shocks from the front wheel wells.

Also, to test the shock sensor's sensitivity, remove the fuse for the horn first. It is located in the engine compartment by the battery.

GJBenn... I'm not sure which install I will do but where can I find the door alarm wire? What color? Also what relay did you use?

Zanary... thanks for the updated diagram.

You don't really need a door wire if you are tying into the hood trip wire (lt green or lt green/black). If you really want a door pin, grab one of these:
The driver side door triggers are in the white 15 pin plug at the BCM in the drivers kick panel. The driver door is white in pin 62, and the driver rear door is pink in pin 63. The passenger side door triggers are in the white 40 pin plug. The front passenger door is pink/black in pin 12, and the rear passenger door is pink/blue in pin 13.

Oh and guys you should really use the 504K shock sensor.

Behind the driver's kick plate in a bundle of about six wires. On the 2005, the front driver's door trigger is a solid white wire, maybe 18-20 gauge.

As for the relay, buy any five pin automotive relay. You do not need the relay if you use the hood pin.

Very cool. When I picked up the 504M, I did't see the 504K. I like the switch and the flashing LED. I guess I can always swap out my 504M for the 504K and then decide on where to put the led and the switch.
